How IBAN Validation Works
IBAN validation uses the ISO 13616 mod-97 algorithm. First, the country code is checked against a list of valid codes with expected lengths. Then the IBAN is rearranged (first 4 characters moved to the end), letters converted to numbers (A=10, B=11, etc.), and the resulting number is checked for mod 97 = 1. This catches transposition and transcription errors that commonly occur when entering bank account numbers.
