Understanding LLM Tokens
Large Language Models process text as tokens — subword units that are typically 3-4 characters long for English text. "Hello world" is 2 tokens, but code and non-English text may tokenize differently. API costs are calculated per token (separately for input and output), making token counting essential for budgeting. Different models use different tokenizers: GPT-4o uses o200k_base (~3.7 chars/token), GPT-4/3.5 use cl100k_base (~4 chars/token), and Claude uses its own BPE tokenizer (~3.5 chars/token).
