PDF splitting is the reverse operation of merging — extracting specific pages or ranges from a larger document to create smaller, focused files. Common use cases include extracting a specific chapter from an ebook for sharing, separating a combined invoice document into individual invoices for different clients, pulling specific pages from a legal filing to share only relevant sections, extracting images or charts from a report for presentations, separating a scanned multi-page document into individual records, and breaking a large PDF into smaller files that meet email attachment size limits. The AllTools PDF Splitter handles all these scenarios using pdf-lib.js, processing your documents entirely in the browser. You specify exact page ranges — such as pages 1-5, or pages 3, 7, 12 — and the tool creates a new PDF containing only those pages. Your original document remains unchanged, and the split files are downloaded directly to your device without passing through any server.

Different splitting needs call for different approaches. For extracting a single chapter from a long document, identify the start and end page numbers by scrolling through the PDF first, then specify that range. For splitting every page into individual files — useful for scanned documents where each page is a separate record — use the extract-all-pages mode which creates one PDF per page. For splitting at regular intervals — for example, splitting a 60-page document into 10 sections of 6 pages each — calculate the page ranges manually. For business documents where split points correspond to logical sections like chapters or monthly reports, knowing your document structure in advance makes splitting straightforward.
